On Monday, March 1st 2010 kooaba demonstrates its prototype for live augmented reality on Android phones. Unlike other systems, kooaba’s prototype is based on visual recognition, which brings Augmented Reality to the next level.
At the Mobile Monday special event „Hands on Augmented Reality“, kooaba reveals its latest prototype of an Augmented Reality application for Google Android mobile phones. Unlike other mobile Augmented Reality systems only for stationary objects, which work with GPS and compass information, kooaba’s system integrates real-time image recognition technology. This allows for recognizing and labelling objects on the phone’s screen with high precision. It therefore allows for augmenting both stationary objects (landmarks such as churches, statues) and non-stationary objects (such as products, newspapers, billboards). Kooaba’s application is first of its kind to show such capabilities to the general public. The demonstration starts on Monday, March 1st 2010 at 1600 on Polyterasse of ETHZurich .
The prototype has been developed in close cooperation between kooaba and the Computer Vision laboratory at ETH Zurich and was generously supported by the Swiss innovation promotion agency CTI and Haslerstiftung.
In a co-located event on the same day, ARDevcamp Zurich, kooaba also announces to openly provide parts of its visual recognition platform to developers for free. The platform will be accessible via an API (Application Programming Interface) after simple sign-up online.
This will give developers around the world access to advanced image recognition tools in order to develop innovative applications.
