BakBone Unveils NetVault: Archive to Help Customers Lower Storage Costs, Reduce Complexity and Facilitate Compliance

BakBone Channel Partners to Benefit from Expanded Data Protection Portfolio

FRANKFURT, Germany — SNW Europe — October 27th, 2009 — BakBone Software® (OTCBB: BKBO), a leading provider of Universal Data Management solutions, today unveiled BakBone NetVault®: Archive, the latest addition to the company’s portfolio of data protection solutions. The solution will allow IT administrators to improve the efficiency of their storage infrastructures while facilitating data retention compliance and reducing management complexity and overhead, ultimately lowering overall storage costs. BakBone NetVault: Archive gives organisations the ability to benefit from a tiered storage strategy that encompasses policy-based storage automation, search & e-discovery, policy-based storage automation and audit management, all in a single package.

Analysts report that as the amount of stored data doubles annually and organisations maximise their storage resources and take advantage of the different price tiers of storage media to lower their TCOs, the Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) software market (which includes archiving) will continue to grow by approximately 25%. One of the fastest growing segments of the storage management software market is file archiving. This should come as no surprise as file sizes continue to increase rapidly with the size of many databases already running into multi-terabytes and reaching petabytes in selected industry segments.

“The archiving market is growing rapidly because it brings tangible benefits from the start,” said Carla Arend, senior research analyst, European storage software at IDC. “By removing data that is not frequently needed from the primary storage, you immediately free up expensive resources and the reliability and speed of your data recovery increase significantly because you have less data to restore.”

Today BakBone also announced NetVault: Archive for SharePoint®; this allows Microsoft SharePoint users to reduce their need for costly primary storage by deploying a tiered storage strategy that lets them access archived data as though it were still contained within SharePoint.  NetVault: Archive for SharePoint offers IT administrators a single point of archiving for all their data, allowing them to extend the advantages of the original version to their SharePoint data.

Meeting an existing demand, the two versions of NetVault: Archive represent a considerable advantage for BakBone’s channel. “The addition of NetVault: Archive to the BakBone product range will allow resellers to recommend end-to-end solutions, helping them become the end user data protection partner of choice,” said Keith Humphreys, managing consultant at EuroLAN.

NetVault: Archive will offer several features that directly address a number of issues currently encountered in datacentres:

·         NetVault: Archive’s automated policy management: reduces IT and storage management workloads.

·         Search and discovery: allows users to search across some or all the file data increasing productivity, reducing the cost of locating information and lowering the risk of related financial penalties.

·         Secondary storage virtualisation: devices are presented as single or multiple storage virtual pools to deliver higher ROI. Users can configure virtual pools, cloud storage, or mix-and-match combinations of on-premise and cloud designs.

·         Single-instance storage: eliminates duplicate copies of files, optimising storage utilisation and cutting CAPEX and OPEX.

·         Security: data is encrypted and access is granted through role-based policies.

·         Clustered grid: delivers high performance, scalability up to 20 petabytes, high availability and a pay-as-you-grow model to help minimise up-front financial investment.

·         Data shredding: at the end of its retention period, data is destroyed according to the relevant legal and/or corporate requirements.

BakBone NetVault: Archive will offer a self healing capability for both hardware and software and a distributed file system with single global namespace capable of being distributed across multiple physical locations.

“Archiving is one of the hottest technologies in IT today because it allows users to successfully tame the sprawling growth of electronic information. By removing infrequently-accessed data to lower-cost storage media, such as SATA disks, archiving cuts storage acquisition and management costs while ensuring organisations remain compliant,” said Andrew Brewerton, EMEA technical director, BakBone. “Also, by reducing the amount of data kept on primary storage, archiving significantly improves application performance and reduces the time required to back up and recover.”
